Why would I disengage my knives?

Question

Please tell me when I would use my serger with the knife down.

Answer

Generally when you have already serged something and just going around the piece again to fill in the stitching on the edges more fully. Like in rolled hem napkin edges.

Or if you have already cut a precise edge with sharp sheers - we do this frequently when serging fleece because fleece dulls knives more quickly than regular fabric.

When you are doing a flat lock stitch.
